It is essential that scholarship be made available under terms that permit and encourage further scholarly work. This requires both appropriate choices of technology, and of licenses. Just as appropriate technological choices ensure that others will, in practical terms, be able to use our work, licenses are the legal mechanism for ensuring that other scholars have the necessary permissions to use our work.

It is also desirable to follow a standard licensing practice wherever possible, to simplify and clarify what permissions are guaranteed to other scholars.
